I was eager to accept an offer to try the Fourteen Homes Vegetable Chopper, which makes prep work more effortless.
The premise is that on one side of the chopper device you can dice, and on the other you can slice, using stainless steel blades that are interchangeable.
After a few weeks, I found this 14-in-1 tool ($23) to be a big time saver, especially when you have a ton of vegetables or fruit to prepare.
Let’s start with the dicing side. I found it very easy to dice, and I liked the uniform-sized pieces vs. the variability I get with a knife. The dicer that comes attached to the chopper out of the box was a little hard to remove because the plastic was melted together, but subsequent times swapping out the two sizes of dicers was no problem.
I noticed that bits of vegetables got in the press cut, which pushes down on the object you’re sending through the dicer. Fortunately, Fourteen Homes thought of everything and provided a small cleaning brush specifically for cleaning out the press cut.
I own a mandolin with interchangeable blades, and Fourteen Homes’ slicer felt safer thanks to the cover on top of the blades. The various types of slicers allow you to grate, make thin and thick slices, create crinkle slices, shred and mash.
Also, removing all the blades was straightforward, which also makes it easy to clean all the different parts.
Whether you’re slicing or dicing, you’ll find it handy to have a 1.3-liter plastic tub that attaches to the chopper to catch everything. The tub also serves to hold all the blades when you’re not using it, making for a compact design.
Of note, Fourteen Homes makes other handy kitchen gadgets, including a meat chopper and a steel garlic press.
