Disney on Ice preview

After 10 years, Disney on Ice returns to Madison with “Reach for the Stars,” with shows tonight through Sunday at the Alliant Energy Center. I accepted an invitation to see the Thursday show, though this preview was written before my attendance.

Disney fans will see performances by “Frozen” characters Anna, Elsa and Olaf; “Tangled” characters Rapunzel and Flynn Rider; and “Beauty and the Beast” characters Belle and Beast, among others. I actually look forward to watching Sebastian and Ariel from “The Little Mermaid” do an ’80s pop montage.

For parents bringing their little ones, note the show is a short 1.5ish hrs, with a 15-min. intermission. Tickets cost $15-$60, and all seats are reserved.

“Reach for the Stars” is produced by Feld Entertainment, which told me it selected Madison because the city “is a great family community with so much to offer in terms of family entertainment.”

We sure like to celebrate the holidays here in town. Following is a guide to some upcoming holiday parties, shows, races and events in Madison:

Shows

Nick Lowe’s “Quality Holiday Revue” with Los Straightjackets takes place at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Barrymore. Tickets are $25.
StageQ’s “Christmas with the Crawfords” runs Dec. 5-20 at the Bartell. Tickets are $15-$20.
Jonathan & Kitty’s Totally Secular Holiday Extravaganza with the Revivalists starts at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 11 at the Barrymore. Tickets are $20.
“A Christmas Carol” runs Dec. 12-23 at the Overture Center. Tickets are $25-$49.
“The Nutcracker” runs Dec. 13-27 at the Overture Center. Tickets are $14-$65.

Parties

Magnet Holiday Party: Masqued in Mystery is held Dec. 4 at the Bayou. Tickets are $15-$35.
The Mad Men Holiday Soiree runs Dec. 5-6 (two nights due to popular demand) at the Majestic. Tickets are $25.
The Club 201 Holiday Party with the Madison Symphony Orchestra is held on Dec. 5 at the Overture Center. Tickets are $35.
The 80s vs. 90s Christmas Sweater Ball begins at 9:30 p.m. Dec. 20 at the Majestic. Tickets are $5.

Races

Run, Santa, Run 5K takes place Dec. 7 on the Capitol Square. Fees are $25-$45.
The Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis is held on Dec. 7 at Verona High School. Fees are $20-$30.
The Santa Swimsuit Run and Beach Party takes place Dec. 13 starting at Whiskey Jack’s.

Other Events

The Holiday Fantasy in Lights runs Nov. 14-Jan. 4 at Olin Park. Admission is free.
Tudor Holiday Dinners with the Philharmonic Chorus of Madison take place Dec. 3-8 at the Memorial Union. Tickets are $47.50-$52.
The Holiday Shopping Expo runs Dec. 6-7 at the Alliant Energy Center. Tickets are $2-$4.
Holiday Express runs Dec. 6-31 (except Dec. 25) at Olbrich Gardens. Tickets are $2-$3.
Christmas Brew ‘N View with the movie “Elf” starts at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 20 at the Majestic. Tickets are $7.

Madison Food & Wine Show 2011

The 10th annual Madison Food & Wine Show, presented by Madison Magazine, takes place Friday-Sunday at Exhibition Hall at the Alliant Energy Center. If you can’t attend, make sure to follow me on Twitter (@EatDrinkMadison), as I’ll be live-tweeting all weekend from the event.

As usual, I’m looking forward to sampling some of the 300 wines and taste some of the gourmet food. I even re-watched “Sideways” this week to get me in the wine mood. Here’s some more info on the event:

Tickets

A one-day pass is $37/advance, $42/door, while a weekend pass is $60/advance, $70/door. Order online or at outlets throughout the city. Note: no one under the age of 21 is allowed–no exceptions.

Friday, 5-9 p.m.

Events include “How to Host a Wine Party” ($10) and a beer and chocolate pairing ($10). Also, see the first two rounds of the dueling chefs competition.

Saturday, noon-5 p.m.

Check out the port and bleu cheese tasting ($10), Madison College’s pastry arts cake decorating and a Chef Showcase with Rod Ladson of Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse.

Sunday, noon-5 p.m.

The finalists of the Big Cheese Cook-off will compete to make the best grilled cheese sandwich. In addition, catch the finals of the dueling chefs competition.
