Sugar River Pizza Company

Sunday, June 12th, 2016

When UW SWAP moved from near the Madison College Truax Campus to Verona, I remember driving out to the new location thinking I was in the middle of nowhere. Since then, Wisconsin Brewing Co. opened nearby, and now Sugar River Pizza Company recently launched its third location, on the other side of County M.

The menu is not unlike other pizza places, as you’ll find pasta dishes, appetizers such as bread sticks and cheese bread, salads and sandwiches. Sugar River also has a full bar in its large space.

Lots of specialty pizzas: It’ll take you a long time to eat your way through the list of 19 specialty pizzas served here. You may order them in 10″, 12″, 14″ or 16″ sizes, with your choice of thin, hand-tossed or whole-wheat crusts. Prices range from $13.20-$22.95. I loved the pizzas I tried, and I can’t wait to come back for more.

  • The Kicking Horse Four Alarm is topped generously with pepperoni, sausage, jalapenos and red onions. I couldn’t discern much spice from the habanero cheese, but there was still a nice spice level from the jalapenos.
  • The Concord Chicken Bacon is a like a chicken club sandwich on a pizza. You’ll like the bacon and ranch sauce that goes with the tender pieces of chicken.
  • In future visits, I’ve got my eye on the steak pizza (chunks of T-bone and porterhouse with steak sauce) and the MacDaddy (ground beef, pickles and Big Mac-like sauce).

Hope you like carbs:

  • The calzone ($9.95 with two toppings) is moist, packed with flavor (especially the buttery, soft crust) and exploding with cheese. However, after several bites of the calzone, I could have used some marinara sauce, which the staff forgot to give me in my carryout order.
  • The Po River Italian sandwich ($9.95) may remind you of an Italian hoagie combined with a Cuban sandwich, with its Usinger’s salami, ham and pepperoni topped with honey mustard.

Sugar River Pizza Company is open every day for lunch, dinner and carryout. Delivery is available, too.

New items at Burger King, Papa John’s

Sunday, October 18th, 2015

In late September, Burger King announced the limited-time A.1. Halloween Whopper ($4.99). The black bun, which has A.1. flavor baked into it, looks creepy, almost rotten.

To my surprise, the bun didn’t really have any discernible flavor. When you bite into the sandwich, you taste everything else–the grilled patty, the tomato, the cheese, etc. I even ate part of the bun by itself, and it tasted like a regular bun.

So while this may be a well-timed gimmick, there’s no need to rush out there to buy the Halloween Whopper. Plus, you can avoid having green poop.

Monster toppings? That’s what’s new at Papa John’s, but in this case, I’m referring to size, not scariness. You can get the Extra Large Original Crust with Monster Toppings ($19.99). What that means is you get a sausage and pepperoni pizza, topped with another layer of cheese and sausage.

The pizza tastes pretty much like any regular Papa John’s pizza (that’s a good thing). The thing is, I didn’t really detect the extra thickness. In fact, I felt there was more pepperoni–probably because they were extra large themselves–than sausage, despite twice as much of the latter. You may as well as save some money and just order the regular pizza.

Also new at Papa John’s are the cinnamon knots ($5), released a few months ago. These were quite disappointing, especially compared to their photo online.

I expected something resembling Cinnabon in taste, but instead, the knots were just a bunch of dry, doughy buns, with hardly any frosting or cinnamon flavor. I’m hopeful if I ordered these again, they would be prepared better, but I’m not taking the risk.

New items at Little Caesars, Taco Bell

Sunday, April 12th, 2015

Three-and-a-half feet.

That’s how much bacon Little Caesars uses for its generically named Bacon Wrapped Crust Deep! Deep! Dish pizza. At $12, it’s more than double the price of other pizzas, but with good reason. Note, these pizzas are not “hot-n-ready,” so be prepared for a 10-minute wait after ordering.

I appreciated that Little Caesars gives you two four-slice pizzas instead of one eight-slice pizza so that you get eight corner pieces, meaning more bacon. There’s also bacon pieces sprinkled on top, along with the standard pepperoni (no other toppings are available).

To no surprise, each bite was very bacon-y; or in other words, delicious. The deep dish pizzas don’t have a true crust, which is nice, since you get to take bites of the strips of bacon with the main parts of the pizza. I would likely order this pizza again if it weren’t for the fact that each slice is 450 calories (and yikes, I ate three!).

Taco Bell has further expanded its breakfast menu with biscuits shaped like taco shells, called biscuit tacos. Inside, you can get eggs and cheese, sausage/bacon and eggs or fried chicken (the latter two cost $2.49 each).

The sausage and eggs biscuit taco tastes exactly like McDonald’s version (that’s a good thing). Meanwhile, the bacon is served in bits in the bacon and eggs biscuit taco, which can make for a lot of crumbs. You’ll need coffee, juice or milk to wash these biscuits down, as they do get fairly dry in your mouth.

I particularly enjoyed the chicken biscuit taco. The chicken itself is perfectly fried on the outside and moist on the inside. (It seems Taco Bell could be in line to take on KFC.) Although the sandwich doesn’t need it, you can get it served with a rich, flavorful gravy, or a sweet Asian sauce-like jalapeno honey sauce. What a delicious and unhealthy way to start your day!
