Marco’s Pizza
Sunday, June 24th, 2018Jet’s Pizza
Sunday, October 29th, 2017I wasn’t originally planning on reviewing Jet’s Pizza, but I changed my mind after looking at its menu more closely and realizing it goes beyond the standard pizza place.
Pizza comes in either deep dish or hand-tossed crusts, and I am a fan of the former because at Jet’s, they’re thick, smothered with cheese and loaded with toppings and thus full of flavor. You can enhance your crusts, too. The turbo crust, for example, combines butter, garlic and romano flavoring, making the already enjoyable deep dish crust even better.
Specialty pizzas include Alfredo chicken, BLT and Meatball Supremo. I really liked the Eugene Supreme ($13 as a 4 Corner pizza, $21 as 8 Corner pizza) for its ample amount of sausage and balanced mix of onions, green peppers and mild peppers.
Jetzees are sandwiches that use garlic parmesan bread–similar to Little Caesar’s crazy bread–automatically making the 8″ sandwich ($6.99) unique and tasty. I enjoyed the steak & cheese for its tender steak and fresh tomatoes, and the side of Italian dressing was unnecessary but did add another level of flavor.
The tuna deli boat ($6.99), the other form of sandwich that’s offered, did have a deli freshness to it, despite that it uses thick pizza dough topped with butter and romano as the bread (so have a few napkins ready). Other deli boats include Italian and veggie.
“Sidekicks” are comprised of various forms of breadsticks and wings. The Jet’s Triple Cheese Turbo Stix ($5.99) were crunchy and cheesy but not overly so, and they weren’t as garlicky as I had anticipated, but nonetheless, these stix are crowd-pleasers. Although you won’t need any sauce, you have your choice of alfredo, bleu cheese, butter garlic, jalapeno cheese, pizza or ranch.
I do have to warn you that all this deliciousness comes at a major cost to your health. According to the Jet’s Pizza website, the steak & cheese jetzees are 1,350 calories, the tuna deli boats are 1,200 calories, each slice of the 4 Corner Eugene Supreme is 450 calories and each stick of the Triple Cheese Turbo Stix is 150 calories. The portion sizes aren’t that big, either, meaning a lot of calories are crammed into each bite.
Jet’s Pizza is open every day for lunch and dinner (carryout-only).

Pizza Di Roma
Sunday, August 13th, 2017New York-style pizza-by-the-slice is available outside of downtown, now that Pizza Di Roma has opened a location where Legends used to be.
The space is much brighter than Legends ever was but has an awkward set-up, primarily because it’s a counter-service restaurant integrated into a former sports bar.
In all the years I’ve eaten at the downtown location of Pizza Di Roma, I’ve never ordered anything but pizza, so in recent visits to the west side location, I explored the rest of the menu, which turned out to be bigger than expected.
A few appetizers lead off. The breaded cheese ravioli ($6.95) is massively breaded, but at least a lot of ricotta cheese greets you inside. You also can order chicken wings ($8.95) and fried calamari ($9.95).
You have lots of pasta dishes, including staples such as lasagna and tortellini, from which to choose. Among the more unique was the spaghetti putanesca ($9.95; should be spelled with two Ts). The black olive flavor is most prevalent, while the carrot shavings added an unwelcome texture. There were just a few pieces of anchovies, which were not overly salty.
Similar to the pasta dishes, the entrees will take 5-10 min. to prepare. The chicken arrabbiata ($10.95) sports an assortment of peppers, including jalapenos. The marinara sauce was average, the noodles were similar to sub-par ones found in a diner and the two thin chicken breasts were pretty tough.
Other entrees include shrimp marinara ($12.95) and eggplant parmesan ($11.95).
Among the subs, I got the sausage and peppers ($7.95). The slices of Italian sausage and strips of green peppers are topped with marinara sauce and cheese, then stuffed inside a huge roll. It’s a lot of bread, which turned out to be necessary to hold all the ingredients together.
The west side location of Pizza Di Roma is open for lunch and dinner Monday-Saturday.
