Food & Wine Show purchases

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

Just in time for the holiday season, here’s a list of the items I purchased at the Madison Food & Wine Show back in October. They were all so delicious that I’ve already finished most of the items.

  • Asian Spicy Sweet and Sour Dipping Sauce from Penny Lane Farm. Try this on chicken or pork.
  • Bee Barf Honey from Hidden Oaks Apiary (608-235-5873). Wow, this stuff is fantastic! Great name, too.
  • Cured meat from Bolzano Meats. Warning, you will need floss or a toothpick after you eat their tasty products.
  • Sea Salt Caramel and Bacon Toffee from Christine’s Gourmet Toffee. It really is gourmet! In fact, these toffees were served in the 2011 Emmy Awards celebrity gift bags.
  • Pomegranate Cranberry Whey from Tera’s Whey. Mix this with milk for a healthy snack or breakfast alternative.
  • Milk Chocolate Truffles from Indulgence Chocolatiers. As they claim, it’s “truly exceptional chocolate.”

Madison Food & Wine Show 2011

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

The 10th annual Madison Food & Wine Show, presented by Madison Magazine, takes place Friday-Sunday at Exhibition Hall at the Alliant Energy Center. If you can’t attend, make sure to follow me on Twitter (@EatDrinkMadison), as I’ll be live-tweeting all weekend from the event.

As usual, I’m looking forward to sampling some of the 300 wines and taste some of the gourmet food. I even re-watched “Sideways” this week to get me in the wine mood. Here’s some more info on the event:

Tickets

A one-day pass is $37/advance, $42/door, while a weekend pass is $60/advance, $70/door. Order online or at outlets throughout the city. Note: no one under the age of 21 is allowed–no exceptions.

Friday, 5-9 p.m.

Events include “How to Host a Wine Party” ($10) and a beer and chocolate pairing ($10). Also, see the first two rounds of the dueling chefs competition.

Saturday, noon-5 p.m.

Check out the port and bleu cheese tasting ($10), Madison College’s pastry arts cake decorating and a Chef Showcase with Rod Ladson of Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse.

Sunday, noon-5 p.m.

The finalists of the Big Cheese Cook-off will compete to make the best grilled cheese sandwich. In addition, catch the finals of the dueling chefs competition.

Madison Food and Wine Show

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Though I can’t make the 9th annual Madison Food and Wine Show this weekend because I’ll be out of town, I thought I’d take a look back at a previous recap I wrote:

My third time to the annual Food and Wine Show at the Alliant Energy Exhibition Hall was like the previous times: enjoyable and filling.

The ticket price at $37 in advance is a bit steep, so you have to really eat and drink a lot to get your money’s worth. I must say, I definitely did this year.

The premise, if you don’t know, is that you get to try unlimited free samples of wine and bite-sized food from many, many regional vendors. Some of the stands have several dozen samples of wine! That’s why many people get weekend passes for the three-day event.

Also worth noting: you get to keep the wine glass you use for sampling, and many other freebies throughout the event are available.

Since I wasn’t driving, I went all out–a big mistake as I ended up having exactly 50 samples of wine, three beers and two margaritas. Talk about a hangover!

As usual, Sentry Metcalfe’s and Willy St. Co-op provided some great food to sample.

There’s also several cooking shows, including the entertaining chef cook-off (won this year by the Concourse Hotel cook).

Most of the wine is available for purchase as you leave. Saturday night also has had a secret top-shelf (all wines worth $40 or more) party.

I highly recommend going if you can afford it.
