Tamalitoz

Tamalitoz Chili PopsYou don’t often see candy that’s both sweet and spicy, but that’s what I got in accepting an offer to try the product line from Tamalitoz by Sugarox.

New in the market are the Chili Pops Chamoy ($3.40 for a 2.75 oz. bag). These sweet and spicy lollipops come in various flavors. One bag has cucumber, tamarind and coconut chamoyada yada yada, and the other has Divine Watermelon, Lip Smacking Mango and Pineapple Galore.

For the former, the primary flavor (e.g., cucumber or coconut) greets you first. As you work through the lollipop, you can start to see and taste more of the chili powder grains, which interestingly brought a rough surface to the candy. It’s a wild ride for your taste buds for sure.

Some of these flavors of Chili Pops Chamoy are derived from another product by Tamalitoz, also called Tamalitoz ($3.99 for a 4 oz. bag), which is a hard candy. I tried the Lip Smacking Mango. When you open the bag and take a whiff, you will only smell the chili peppers. However, the hard candy itself is sweet on the outside, and eventually, you will reach the chili powder in the middle, making for a spicy ending.

Other flavors of Tamalitoz include Bite Me Orange, Peach Slapped and Cranberry Fantasy.

Tamalitoz Pineapple PalomitazTo my surprise, the product line extends to popcorn called Palomitaz ($5 for a 4 oz. bag). After the Tamalitoz, I was wary of taking a whiff of the bag of popcorn, but it smelled like regular popcorn and looked like caramel corn. It’s made with organic, non-GMO corn.

For a split second, the first bite of the Pineapple Galore version reminded me of Corn Pops, but then it immediately became a wonderful pineapple flavor with just a hint of chili. In other words, it’s far less spicy than the Chili Pops Chamoy or the Tamalitoz, and the sweetness comes from pure cane sugar.

Other flavors include Divine Watermelon and Churros and Chocolate Caliente.

You can purchase Tamalitoz products on its website.
