I’ve seen more and more non-alcoholic–also known as “zero proof”–spirits at the liquor store, so I was eager to try Philters, just in time for Dry January.
Philters ($39.95 for a 750 ml bottle) is made by Maya Tea Company, which specializes in plant-based beverages. Each spirit features adaptogens, which are herbs, roots and other plant substances that are designed to promote a sense of well-being while providing calm and soothing effects.
I thought Philters did an outstanding job of mimicking the flavor of its alcoholic counterparts, and it provided a bite by adding an afterburn of some degree to each of its spirits.
Each 2 oz. serving has 5-20 calories and 0-2 g. of carbs. No refrigeration is required.
Philters comes in four varieties:
- Jynn (gin) smelled like a floral black licorice and had a burn when consumed neat. Mixed with tonic, Jynn was enjoyable and not too different from the real thing.
- After I took a whiff of the Ruhm (rum), I instantly thought of a cookie, as the cinnamon and ginger were prevalent. I mixed Ruhm with cola, and it made for a sweet and spiced mocktail.
- Though the smell of the Wiski (whiskey) reminded me of root beer, the flavor had a strong smokiness from the oak chips, and I think the afterburn came from the Siberian ginseng. I found the recipe on the Philters website to make a whiskey sour, and this was actually a pretty outstanding mocktail.
- I think the Mezkahl (mezcal) was the smoothest on its own. The coriander was the most prevalent flavor, and you will notice sweetness from the organic cane sugar. A recommended recipe combines it with grapefruit soda, which somehow made it spicier.
You can purchase Philters on its website.
