Taqueria Mexico

Taqueria MexicoA new restaurant aptly named Taqueria Mexico opened recently near the Kalahari in Lake Delton.

The tacos ($3-$4 each) are called street tacos but are not small like street tacos can be. They are served on flour or corn tortillas in Mexican style (with cilantro and onions) or American style (with lettuce and cheese).

I got the cabeza taco, since you don’t often see beef cheek on menus. The meat was tender and delicious, and I knew my meal was off to a good start. Other choices for your tacos include rajas (roasted peppers, onions and mushrooms), al pastor (marinated grilled pork) and picadillo (ground beef).

You also can get rolled tacos ($7 for three, $10 for five), which were fine. They had a decent crunch and just enough chicken, but they left me feeling a bit unfulfilled.

Taqueria MexicoOn the other hand, I was absolutely stuffed from a couple of other dishes. The alambre de camaron ($20) was basically six tacos with green peppers, cheese, bacon and your choice of meat. I got shrimp, and there was plenty to go around that I could have made about eight tacos from all the toppings.

The chile verde ($14) comes on a big plate, and I’m glad I had a big appetite. It was so flavorful and delicious, and I paired each mouthful with some of the accompanying tortillas.  You get your choice of steak, pork or chicken, and I thought the pork was outstanding.

I also enjoyed the quesadilla ($11), which was thick with a ton of excellent asada (your other choices are pollo, al pastor or carnitas).

Burritos make up a sizable section of the menu. The chori-pollo burrito ($13, also available as a bowl) was incredibly tasty and juicy from the generous portion of chorizo and grilled chicken. I was salivating for every subsequent bite.

Taqueria MexicoThe breakfast burrito ($12, also available as a bowl) was a hit, too. It was loaded with scrambled eggs and your choice of ham or chorizo. I also thought it went well with the homemade hot sauce.

While there is no bar at Taqueria Mexico, you can order bottled and tap beer as well as margaritas. Also note that the restaurant is counter service.

Taqueria Mexico is open every day for lunch and dinner.
