ILike Sushi recently opened in a strip mall in Middleton, and you’ll likely order for carryout or delivery since there are only a few tables.
But as small as the space is, the menu is vast, and it includes everything from sushi appetizers to sushi boats. I started with the namesake: the ILike Sushi roll ($14.50) had some outstanding softshell crab as well as shrimp tempura in a roll topped with avocado, tuna and salmon. I thought the roll was just right–it didn’t need anything else added to it.
I also tried a deep-fried roll called the Volcano roll ($12.95). What I liked about it was that it wasn’t overly breaded and provided a nice crunch to the tender white fish, which you don’t often see in sushi, alongside the baked crab. The roll also had tobiko, eel sauce and spicy mayo.
One other form of sushi I had was the sushi pizza ($10.50), which was quite tasty. It’s scallion bread quartered and loaded with your choice of tuna, eel or salmon, plus avocado, tobiko and scallions. Eat this quickly, or otherwise, it gets too soggy.
While the menu includes poke bowls, I got something slightly different in the Salmon Lava Rice Bowl ($16.95). The flavorful bowl was quite a concoction, especially with a soft-boiled egg in the center. On the bottom is rice, and then you have lightly seared salmon, which was very tender, smothered in mayo, teriyaki sauce, flying fish roe, sesame seeds, scallions and seaweed shavings.
Even though the specialty here is sushi, I couldn’t help myself in ordering the tonkatsu ramen ($13.95). I didn’t care for the gobs of corn, especially since they were slightly undercooked, and the noodles were too al dente. The broth was milder in flavor than I was expecting, but at least the marinated egg and thinly sliced pork were delicious.
ILike Sushi is open for lunch and dinner every day.
