Zippy Lube Coffee, Donuts, and Fried Chicken

Zippy LubeZippy Lube Coffee, Donuts, and Fried Chicken is a mouthful to say, but the name makes it very clear what this north-side restaurant, located in a former Zippy Lube auto shop, sells.

Already in the six months that it has been opened, Zippy Lube has increased its prices. So what you see on the restaurant’s website is out of date.

The fried chicken ($6.49 for two pieces, $10.99 for four, $19.99 for eight) is not greasy and is tender and juicy. The seasoning is a little different from other fried chicken, giving it a unique flavor. I received a wing and a thigh without specifying.

I thought the fried chicken sandwich ($7.99) would be similar, but it was different in a good way. The patty had the perfect amount of breading, leading to good crispiness outside and tenderness inside. I also liked the house pickles, which brought a slight sourness to the sandwich. Meanwhile, the Northside hot sauce has some much-appreciated kick to it (you can get regular sauce if you prefer).

Zippy LubeHot N’ Fresh donuts are 99 cents each, while premium donuts are $1.49 each. The chocolate vanilla buttercream was dry, although it looked like it had been sitting out for several hours. At least the buttercream was very good.

I had better luck with the pink strawberry donut. The frosting has some slight strawberry flavor to it, but you’re mostly tasting the donut itself, which had an enjoyable fried flavor.

Among the sides, I highly recommend the mac n’ cheese ($3.99 for small, $7.99 for large). It’s a super creamy blend of American and sharp cheddar with excellent consistency. While I prefer creamy cole slaw ($2.99 for small, $5.99 for large), I did enjoy this vinaigrette-based version with fresh and crispy vegetables.

Zippy Lube is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner from Thursday through Monday.
