Sookie’s Veggie Burgers, which features a 100% vegan menu, launched as a food truck in Milwaukee. Its State Street location in Madison is its only restaurant.
The compact menu spans meals throughout the day and includes coffee, cupcakes, ice cream, beer, hard seltzer and of course, sandwiches.
The California burger ($10) was made of peas, carrots, zucchini and onions. The patty is a little mushy in some areas, and it doesn’t quite taste like the real thing as an Impossible patty does. However, the surrounding flavors from the onions, tomatoes, lettuce, ketchup and vegan mayo help give it a hamburger feel.
The vegan chicken sandwich ($10) is a wonderful item, as the “chicken” had a good fried flavor and texture, and I liked the vegan mayo and pickles. The other sandwich on the menu is the Impossible burger ($10).
You also can find a couple of breakfast items on the menu. The Savory Breakfast Sandwich ($9) is outstanding. First thought was that the ciabatta is so good–firm but soft with some flavor from the herbs. The guac also is exceptional, though its flavor is so strong that it’s the majority of what you will taste when you eat the sandwich. I enjoyed the Impossible sausage and Just egg, and if you didn’t tell me, I would have thought they were meat.
I tried both side dishes, too. The tater tots ($4) are nice and crispy on the outside, just the way I like them. The best part of the pita dish ($4) is that it comes with hummus that has a slight spiciness to it.
Sookie’s Veggie Burgers is open every day for lunch and dinner.
