Sabores Fusion Grill, located on State Street, has a menu with a wide range of Mexican and American items. As the name implies, some of those items are combined.
Take for example the Crazy Fries and Steak ($14.99). I thought this was an actual burrito since it’s listed as a burrito. Instead, it’s bits of steak, lettuce, cheese and special sauce atop fries with no tortilla. Although my order was missing the eggs, I still enjoyed this concoction.
Another fusion item was the small cheeseburger ($7.99). The patty was seasoned to taste like a taco, and it was topped with lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, onions and special sauce. The burger was enjoyable, but I was disappointed that this item was mislabeled as a “smash burger,” which I would have preferred (and Sabores does actually sell versions of a smash burger).
I was surprised to see po’ boy sandwiches ($10.99) on the menu. I usually have them with deep-fried seafood, but here, your choices are tofu, grilled chicken, shrimp or french fries. I did find the grilled shrimp a nice change of pace. The po’ boy has enough lettuce, sauce and pickles to provide some additional textures and taste, and the roll was fresh and soft but firm enough to hold everything together.
Under a long list of curry platters, I picked the Sabores Sauce Chicken/Rice ($13.99). The sauce is very tomato-y but mellowed by the accompanying rice. The chicken is cut into chunks and was tender. I found myself enjoying the crunch provided by the carrots, cucumber and onion, which fortunately didn’t overwhelm the dish.
I have to say, you could probably eat here twice a day for a few weeks before repeating a dish. The rest of the menu includes the oddly named “Menu to Share” items such as hot dogs ($8.99), pasta such as creamy coconut tofu ($12.99), Mexican items such as tacos, and grilled skewers.
Sabores Fusion Grill is open for dinner Monday through Saturday and lunch Tuesday through Saturday.
