There was no way I was going to pass up an opportunity to try Leinenkugel’s Chocolate Dunkel. It’s a new winter seasonal that became available back in November.
Here’s the lowdown: The Chocolate Dunkel (5.5% ABV) is made from cocoa nibs and a blend of eight malts, including dark chocolate malt and chocolate wheat. It was introduced alongside the Collaboration Lager that I previously reviewed.
“(The chocolate nibs) bring out its chocolate flavor, which is absolutely going to be a holiday treat,” Dick Leinenkugel said in a blog post. “It’s a fabulous beer.”
Indeed, the first thing you notice when you open the can is the aroma of chocolate, which is wonderful. Then you take a sip and you get that chocolate, nutty flavor that is, fortunately, not overly sweet. This beer is a good choice if you want to go one step lighter than a porter.
In Madison, you can find Chocolate Dunkel and Pick N Save, Kwik Trip, Hy-Vee and Festival Foods, among other stores.
