I’ve typically stuck with burgers and brats at State Street Brats, and I don’t ever recall having wings there. But I was impressed after ordering at its ghost kitchen, Wings on State.
Wings come in bone-in and boneless (six for $7, 12 for $10) and your choice of flavors, including tangy gold BBQ and Asian ginger.
I’ll start by praising the large size and meatiness of the boneless wings. The mango habanero flavor is excellent. It’s not overly sweet and is the right level of spicy. Meanwhile, the Stingin’ honey garlic has a powerful garlic flavor and is dripping in delicious honey. I usually wouldn’t think to combine the two, but it worked.
The bone-in wings also were meaty. I loved the garlic parmesan ranch flavor. It’s not as garlicky as the honey garlic, which was a good thing. In fact, the sauce reminded me of the famous 10-cent wings that were sold at Brothers back in the day.
Not surprisingly, you can find chicken sandwiches on the menu. I highly recommend the All-American chicken sandwich ($10). The cutlet itself is pretty thin, but I didn’t mind because the breading for the signature crispy chicken was indeed crispy and more importantly, delicious. The Boom Boom sauce (sweet with a bit of heat) was a nice touch. You get your choice of cheese and toppings; I chose pepperjack, onions and tomato.
I regrettably got the Cowboy chicken sandwich ($10) with grilled chicken, which itself was dry and tasteless. This fact was emphasized, as my sandwich didn’t come with any of the toppings, including the BBQ sauce and the onion strings. Very disappointing. I paid $1 extra for a pretzel bun, and it dwarfed the tiny chicken breast.
Among the few appetizers, I ordered the cheese curds ($10), which were cooked to a perfect crisp on the outside and gooey consistency on the inside, with the right amount of saltiness and greasiness. Although the curds come with ranch sauce, they went really well with the Boom Boom sauce.
Wings on State is open for lunch and dinner every day through UberEats.
