Just in time for Easter, I accepted an offer to review a 2019 Bordeaux rosé from French Blue, which was acquired by C. Mondavi & Family last July.
The wine ($14.99) is a blend of 70% Cabernet Franc and 30% Merlot using grapes expressly harvested for being made as a rosé. In my first few sniffs, I could immediately detect both floral and fruity aromas. After enjoying my first glass, I felt the notes of strawberry were most prevalent.
In fact, French Blue’s 2019 Bordeaux Rosé is an excellent dry wine with a touch of sweetness. It’s the kind of wine you would bring to a picnic or an event like Concerts on the Square.
Entrepreneur Roger Scommegna and winemaker Stephanie Rivin, who is based in Bordeaux, founded French Blue in 2015 with the goal of putting an American twist on French rosé. Their wine is the first from outside California in the C. Mondavi & Family portfolio.
“Having the C. Mondavi & Family team behind us means I can focus on making the best wines possible while they focus on growing the brand,” Rivin said in a statement.
French Blue also offers a Sauvignon Blanc, although I didn’t try it. The wine comes from the Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and has notes of tropical flavors.
In Madison, you can find French Blue wine at Whole Foods, Pick ‘N Save, Target and World Market.
