Earlier this month, the National Restaurant Association released a study that revealed 17 percent of restaurants (110,000) in the country are closed permanently or long term. The Madison area has seen about 25 restaurants close permanently since the March 2020 shutdown (and about 31 all year). However, the number is not as high as you may think:
- In 2019, about 45 restaurants, including Alt n’ Bach’s, Babes, Brocach and Wah Kee, closed permanently.
- In 2018, about 44 restaurants, including Gray’s Tied House, Quaker Steak & Lube and Wasabi, closed permanently.
- In 2017, about 33 restaurants, including Fitzgerald’s, Mermaid Cafe and Opus Lounge, closed permanently.
(The numbers do not include restaurants that changed concepts or renamed themselves.)
UPDATED Dec. 26, 2020: Here is a running list of restaurants in and around Madison, Wis., that have closed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Note, this list is not meant to imply that the restaurants closed because of the pandemic, only during it. Please feel free to let us know of others in the comment section.
