Midcoast Wings

20201008_114456Midcoast Wings is another entry in the ghost kitchen arena, but instead of being attached to a national chain, it’s connected to the Great Dane.

Compared to It’s Just Wings from Chili’s, Midcoast Wings has a slightly more robust menu. For example, you’ll find chicken sandwiches, fried pickles and even a Caesar salad.

I did order one of the sandwiches, the Nashville Hot ($8.99). The chicken itself is a thin cutlet, a little dry but at least deliciously seasoned. I was a little surprised that the Nashville Hot sauce came on the side and not smothered on top. The sauce was smokier than typical, but it did provide a kick, and overall, this was a tasty sandwich. You also can get a crispy battered chicken sandwich ($7.99) and a bacon cheddar BBQ chicken sandwich ($9.29).

20201016_130831One other non-wings menu item I tried was the cauliflower bites ($9.99 for half-pound, $17.99 for full pound). This appetizer was perfect. The cauliflower flavor wasn’t overpowering, and the florets were tender. The breading was ideally situated between crunchy and mushy and had a delicious Buffalo flavor. You won’t need any dipping sauce.

Onto the wings, which come in both boneless ($8.99 for half-pound, $16.99 for one pound) and traditional ($12.99 for 10, $16.99 for 15, $22.99 for 20). You can choose one of 14 sauces and dry rubs, including spicy orange and jerk dry rub.

My choice was the honey chipotle BBQ traditional wings. The first thing I noticed is that the wings could have used more sauce. The honey chipotle was mild in flavor, not too sweet or smoky. All-in-all, they were fairly average wings, but at least the drummettes were massive.

20201008_115733Midcoast Wings also offers specialty wings. The one that caught my eye was curry coconut ($10.49), although it wasn’t listed on the menu on a second visit. The dish is bright with red peppers, peanuts, green onion and cilantro. The boneless wings were meaty and had the right amount of breading. I liked the curry sauce–it’s mild (not full of spices), but you get so little of it that I thought they forgot to add it. At least the peppers are fresh and bring a lot of heat.

The other specialty flavors are Kung Pao, Habanero Hellfire and Peri Peri (sweet red pepper sauce).

Midcoast Wings is open every day for delivery only.
