El Charro Mexican Grill is a standard Mexican restaurant that took over for the short-lived 4 Sisters in Verona. It also has a location in Waunakee.
Although nothing in the menu stood out, everything I tried was satisfying. One of the few unique items was the choripollo ($12.75). The chicken was a bit tough but had a tasty grill flavor that you could still distinguish despite the chicken being drowned in cheese and enchilada sauce. Those sauces were awesome, by the way, as were the crumbles of chorizo sprinkled throughout the dish.
The enchiladas bandera ($10.25) features one beef, one chicken and one cheese enchilada, all of which were made to perfection. I’d give the nod to the chicken as my favorite because it was covered in a delicious spinach sauce.
Par for the course, the steak chimichanga ($11.95) also is smothered in a sauce, this one smoky. I enjoyed the fried tortilla and the tender bits of steak (the only thing inside) so much that I didn’t need any of the accompaniments like the guacamole.
In my visits, the bar area wasn’t getting much use, but you will find a nice drink menu. The iguana margarita ($7.95) gets its sweetness from the added Midori, while the Cadillac margarita ($9.95) is huge and refreshing, with a strong flavor from the fresh lime juice.
El Charro Mexican Grill is open every day for lunch and dinner.
