Ancho & Agave took over for the short-lived Fuddruckers in Greenway Station and transformed it into a bright and energetic venue that will likely have some staying power.
The list of starters is pretty robust. I’m a fan of empanadas, and the shrimp version ($6.75) was mostly satisfying. It’s got a good shell, and I enjoyed the bit of heat. However, the corn-to-shrimp ratio was high. Next time, I’ll order the Mexican poutine ($8.25), which is potatoes topped with queso, salsa and a fried egg.
It would likely take you a few visits to get through all the tacos, which come with corn tortillas, though you can ask for flour or a lettuce wrap. Street tacos ($3.50) include rajas poblanas (roasted mild poblano peppers, portabella mushrooms and cauliflower) and chorizo. The gringo taco is made of ground beef, queso, salsa and pico de gallo. It’s basically a Taco Bell taco with queso (not a bad thing).
Avenue tacos ($4) include barbacoa and Baja fish. I simply could not resist trying the Nashville hot fried chicken taco. The chicken is tasty and does have a little kick, and I enjoyed the sweetness from the golden raisins.
The balance of the menu has burritos, fajitas enchiladas and quesadillas. The smoked pork belly quesadilla ($14.25) wasn’t as savory as it is sweet, stemming from the sweet glaze and the sweet corn, which was a welcome complement. The quesadilla has enough flavor that you don’t need to guacamole, salsa or sour cream. I only wish the pork belly could have been slightly more tender.
Brunch is served on Sundays. The heuvos rancheros ($12.75) is topped with lots of tender carne asada and delicious fried potatoes. I also liked that the crispy corn tortillas held their form. Meanwhile, the Eggs in Purgatory ($13.25) features a chipotle tomato sauce that is flavorful but not spicy as advertised. I loved the tender pork carnitas, and I felt the avocado added color but nothing else to the dish.
Last but not least, I want to talk about the cocktails. One is the Paloma ($7.75), which has a strong tequila and Jarritos Mexican soda flavor but not much grapefruit flavor. Another is the Tequila Sunrise ($7.50)– a sweet, thick and refreshing way to start your day (maybe).
Ancho & Agave serves lunch and dinner every day and brunch on Sundays.
