Yume Japanese Restaurant

20191217_121851Wasabi was the first place I ever had sushi (I remember not liking wasabi paste back then). Yume Japanese Restaurant has now replaced it, and the space is still a good place to get your sushi fix.

You’ll find sushi, sashimi, sushi entrees and regular rolls on the menu, plus a large assortment of specialty rolls, including the Golden Tuna roll ($14.95 with spicy tuna) and the Milwaukee roll ($13.95 with salmon).

I enjoyed the Badger roll ($14.95), aptly named for its color scheme of red (from the caviar) and white (from the crab crunch). It’s a tall roll filled with fried lobster, cucumber, avocado and asparagus and piled high with crab crunch and caviar, taking me two bites to get through it. The fried lobster is meaty but so overwhelmed by the tempura flavor that I taste no lobster.

20191217_120956The “complete meals” section of the menu are mostly teriyaki and tempura dishes that come with miso soup and rice. The Kyu Don ($12.99) was delicious. The sliced beef, onions and egg are cooked together in soy, making the dish resemble an omelette. The beef is tender and tasty and is complemented by the sauteed onions. The pickled radish slices add sour and crunch.

For an appetizer, I ordered the BBQ squid ($7.95). The big rings are tender, and the tentacles have a good char flavor. The small amount of seasoning is pretty much cumin. The squid is good on its own or with the BBQ dipping sauce.

One last area of the menu that I tackled was the “udon or soba” section. I found a hit with the yaki soba ($12.50). Usually, I end up discarding most of the veggies because they’re undercooked, but these were perfect. Meanwhile, the noodles were tender and not at all oily. Although the beef was a little overcooked, the flavor profile is still there.

Yume Japanese Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner every day.
