Sitka Salmon Shares

sitka-salmon-sharesI’ve been a (vegetable) CSA subscriber for almost 10 years, so I was excited to accept an invitation to try Community Supported Fishery (CSF) through Sitka Salmon Shares.

Depending on the share to which you subscribe, each month you can receive at least 4.5-5 lbs. of various kinds of salmon, halibut, rockfish, prawns or Dungeness crab, to name a few. Here’s the pricing for the various shares:

  • Taste of Salmon Share (May-August): starts at $99/month
  • Sitka Salmon Share (August-November): starts at $119/month
  • Seven-Month Premium Sitka Seafood Share (May-November): starts at $119/month
  • Nine-Month Premium Sitka Seafood Share (April-December): starts at $129/month

All the seafood is wild-caught from the waters of Southeast Alaska and the North Pacific and harvested using hook-and-line methods to minimize negative ecological impact. For those who were wondering, Sitka is an island community of 8,689 near Juneau.

My sample box was comprised of coho salmon and pacific cod. The salmon, which I broiled, was everything I wanted it to be–firm, flaky and medium-flavored. Meanwhile, I was impressed with the cod–it was difficult to tell it was ever frozen, and it was much better than the cod you typically get in a local fish fry.

Sitka Salmon Shares, with offices in Alaska, Illinois and Garver Feed Mill in Madison, is Midwest-focused. The tightly focused delivery zone includes Madison, Milwaukee and Peoria, Ill.

By the way, I was pleasantly surprised to see a photo of a guy wearing a Wisconsin Badgers shirt on the Sitka Salmon Shares website. The origin story mentions Marsh, a foodie in Sitka who has family in Green Bay.

If you’re interested in trying a CSF, use special discount code SITKA25 to take $25 off any 2020 Premium Sitka Seafood Share.
