5 Seed Butter

5-seed-butterI’ve previously tried sunflower butter as an alternative to peanut butter, and now Beyond the Equator has taken alternative spreads to another level with its 5 Seed Butter, which I accepted an offer to try.

The seeds are chia, flax, pumpkin, sunflower and hemp. In addition to being peanut-, tree nut- and soy-free, 5 Seed Butter also is gluten-free, vegan-friendly and keto-friendly. Plus, the unsweetened version is Whole 30-friendly.

5 Seed Butter ($9.99/jar) comes in three flavors, and I found them to be a worthy substitute for peanut butter.

The original is smooth and creamy but not as dense as peanut butter. In fact, when you open the jar, the contents will appear a little soupy from the settling, so mix it up before you dig in. The initial taste is sunflower seed, and I couldn’t really discern the other flavors. However, as you chew the butter, it does actually resemble peanut butter in flavor. It’s harder to tell the difference in a PB&J, which I had using strawberry jam.

The crunch in the crunchy version is primarily the sunflower seeds. It doesn’t mean it has a stronger sunflower seed flavor. It tastes exactly the same as the smooth version, so it’s your preference which type you like (I’m a smooth guy).

I was pleasantly surprised by the unsweetened version, which omits the brown cane sugar. I’ve had unsweetened peanut butter and disliked it. This kind was not too dissimilar in taste from the original with perhaps a bit more pumpkin flavor, plus the hint of salt helps it from being too bland.

5 Seed Butter’s nutritional info is comparable to peanut butter. Each serving of two tablespoons has 200 calories, 17 g. fat, 8 g. protein and 5 g. carbs (peanut butter is 190/16/7/8).

Beyond the Equator was founded in 2017 to make products that have superior nutritional value and also taste great. So far, 5 Seed Butter is the New Orleans company’s only product.
