Jose’s Authentic Mexican Restaurant

20191105_123655If you’re in the Dells and craving Mexican food, Jose’s Authentic Mexican Restaurant is a good choice.

In fact, the place was packed with locals during a recent off-season lunch, and that’s a good sign. On top of that, Jose’s had recently moved to the former Kickers location after its original building across from Sarento’s was torn down to make way for a hotel.

Let’s start with lunch. As typical with Mexican restaurants, Jose’s has a familiar-looking lunch menu, with a few less-common items such as huevos con chorizo ($10.99). I opted for the chilaquiles Mexicanos ($11.99), which are fried tortilla chips topped with chicken or beef and cheese. You get a ton of tender strips of chicken, and the chips still have a little crunch despite being crushed with toppings. The mild ranchero sauce even had some kick, which I appreciated. Overall a tasty and filling dish.

The rest of the menu is divided by food type–fajitas, burritos, etc.–along with dinner combinations (similar to the lunch combos, only a lot more of them) and “special dinners.” The latter is where I selected my next items.

Since I liked that dish, it’s no surprise that I also enjoyed the carne asada ($15.99). Here you get the steak in big pieces and without any sauce, allowing you to savor the natural flavor. It’s nice to have guacamole come with this dish, along with the lettuce, tomato and onion.

Jose’s Authentic Mexican Restaurant is open every day for lunch and dinner.
