Angry Rooster

20191007_174200Each Monday, when the Tin Fox is closed, you’ll find a pop-up restaurant called the Angry Rooster. It features fried chicken and pulled pork.

Don’t wait to get inside. Once the doors open at 5 p.m., people are piling inside and the phone is ringing off the hook. I was the first person to place an order, and it still took 30 min.

But it was worth the wait. The chicken comes in two pieces ($10.99), four pieces ($16.99) and six pieces ($23.99) and your choice of plain, Carolina gold, honey butter, mama’s BBQ, Nashville hot or XXX ghost pepper hot flavor.

I have to say, I really enjoyed the chicken. It’s juicy and tender, and the skin is about the thickness of KFC’s original recipe.

  • The Carolina gold was slightly sweet without too much mustard flavor.
  • I appreciated that the Nashville hot was actually spicy. Yum!
  • Mama’s BBQ was sweet, but I thought the sauce would be even better on pulled pork or ribs instead of chicken.

20191007_174132Speaking of the pulled pork, it’s served in a sandwich that’s topped with coleslaw ($10.99). The cabbage was too chunky, but at least the pork was super flavorful even without any sauce, and the bun was deliciously buttery.

For the sides, I liked the cheddar grits the best–nice and thick, not at all soupy. Meanwhile, the biscuit was flaky but dry, the baked beans were hearty and the fries were so-so.

If you’re not into fried chicken, you can get a baked version ($16.99).
