I guess you can say that Serda Brewing, located in Mobile, Ala., is horizontally integrated. It recently launched PrePear and RePear, a two-stage drink mix that helps you recover from the effects of drinking alcohol. Of course, I accepted an offer to try it.
According to the company, PrePair and RePear contain Asian pear extract, which apparently has been shown to reduce the effects of hangovers by up to 21%. Other ingredients include:
- Milk Thistle, N-Acetyl Cysteine, prickly pear extract, glutathione and alpha lipoic acid to help the liver produce alcohol metabolizing enzymes,
- L-theanine and chamomile, an antioxidant and herb that promotes relaxation and sleep, and
- Ginger root and turmeric, which help to alleviate nausea.
Mix each individual packet of powder with 12-16 oz. of water. Drink the PrePear 1-2 hours before your first drink, and consume the RePair immediately after you’re done boozing it up.
I tried them on a long Saturday of drinking (including tailgating before the Badgers football game). The taste resembles a heightened version of Asian pear: sweet and tart while still having a crispness to it. If the flavor is too intense for you, go with 16 oz. of water or more, but be warned that you now have more volume to contend with.
So guess what? I didn’t feel like absolute crap the next day, as PrePear and RePear actually prevented most of the symptoms associated with a hangover. No nausea, dizziness or fatigue, though I did have a slight headache (but far less severe than normal).
PrePear and RePear are in the midst of an IndieGoGo campaign, which is seeking to raise $25,000.
