Sequoia Ramen & Sushi Lounge opened up this summer on Monroe Street where Brocach once stood. It focuses far more on sushi than it does ramen.
In fact, you’ll only find two choices of ramen–Sequoia ($12) and vegetarian ($12), plus a child version–on the menu. Though the pork broth is simmered for 12 hours, it wasn’t flavorful. Meanwhile, the noodles were a bit overcooked and there was way too much corn. At least the pork–all two small slices of it–was tasty.
A whole column of the menu features the various specialty rolls. The Mango Tango ($15) has plenty of avocado and cucumber, plus a big slice of mango, but there’s barely any shrimp. This overpriced roll has some sweetness from the mango, but otherwise, it’s fairly bland.
The Vilas Surprise ($15) was a much better value. It’s stuffed with crab and tempura shrimp and topped with tender salmon and pieces of fried tempura. All in all a delicious roll.
The rest of the menu is comprised of appetizers. The salmon skin salad ($7) features bits of salmon that are cut into strips and fried crispy. It’s very tasty, especially with the oyster sauce, and the salmon skin works well atop a bed of greens.
I also enjoyed the eel bun ($7), despite the fact that the bun was served cold, surprisingly. It comes with a medium-sized slice of eel and julienned cucumber. Pork and tempura shrimp are the other choices.
Lunchtime Monday through Thursday is a good time to go, as you can select an appetizer and bowl of ramen for $14.95.
Sequoia Ramen & Sushi Lounge is open every day for lunch and dinner.
