I haven’t had an opportunity to review spices, so I accepted an offer to try some from Five Continent Spices. However, this review is more about the company than the spices, because it has an interesting story.
The team is made up of five people, each of whom is focused on a region–the United States, Britain, East Asia, Continental Europe and the Middle East. That explains the diverse lineup of organic spices, which include lavender (France), juniper berry (Croatia) and Bay Laurel (Turkey).
Five Continent Spices cares about the environment, so its products come in stainless steel and reusable “SpicePucks” as well as minimalist “Spice Baggies” to reduce waste. (Glass and plastic containers prematurely age spices and contribute to a loss of flavor and potency, according to the company.) In addition, you can use the Spice Baggies ($4.99) to refill your SpicePucks ($9.99).
I tried the Herbes de Provence, made up of organic savory, organic thyme, organic rosemary, organic basil, organic tarragon and organic lavender, on a pork tenderloin. It brought a wonderful aroma and Mediterranean flavor to the pork.
Five Continent Spices is based in Santa Cruz, Calif.
