Grilling for the Family

char-broilI am one of those Wisconsinites that grills year-round. That’s why I happily accepted a copy of Char-Broil Grilling for the Family ($16.37, Creative Homeowner), which came out earlier this month and comes with a whopping 300 recipes.

Those recipes are divided into appetizers, breakfast items, sides and desserts. You’ll also find ways to grill poultry, beef/lamb/venison/bison, pork, seafood and vegetables.

I appreciate that the book also includes techniques, recommended tools, safety tips and temperature guides. In addition, each chapter includes tasks for kids and teens to get them involved in the grilling process.

Here are some of the items I plan on making, starting with breakfast:

  • Grilled apple stuffed with oatmeal (p. 44). This calls for hollowed apples filled with oatmeal (mixed with bananas, light brown sugar and other ingredients) and grilled over indirect heat for 20-25 min.
  • Cheese-stuffed brats (p. 179). Instead of buying brats with cheese, you can make your own by cutting a slit into the brats and adding shredded cheese and green onions, then wrapping the brats in bacon.
  • One-beer skillet bread (p. 250). Add kneaded dough into a cast-iron skillet, brush the top with a beaten egg, add onions and corn, then grill over indirect heat for 50 min. and direct heat for 10 min.

If you’re looking to expand your grilling repertoire beyond burgers, hot dogs and brats, then Char-Broil Grilling for the Family should be your summer (or year-round) companion.
