The name of Freaky’s Pizza and Wings takes after Freakshow, the host of “Bordello of Horror” on Ch. 57. He goes the distance by naming the pizzas with horror film-related names, but unfortunately, the quality of the food is a bit of a horror.
Perhaps as a harbinger, I was once in the middle of an order on a Friday, and the restaurant abruptly closed shortly after 5 p.m. I’m guessing that staffing issues also are affecting the quality of the food, as I’ll soon discuss.
Freaky’s features build-your-own pizzas and specialties called Monster Zas. As examples, the Medusa has spinach, banana peppers, black olives, tomatoes and feta, while the Razorback has ground beef, onion, bacon, cheddar cheese and pepper jack cheese. I was underwhelmed with the Cujo ($12.99 for 12″, $14.99 for 14″ and $16.99 for 16″). It comes with tender beef–at least, the pieces that weren’t overcooked–and chunks of tomato (thus, no sauce), but it was missing the hot giardiniera, which is a crucial component of the pizza.
I got the Cujo on the deep dish crust, and as you can tell from the photo, the crust was fairly deformed. Still, it was soft and reminded me of a hot bun fresh from the oven. The regular crust, which I got in an enjoyable bacon and cheese pizza, was basically one step above thin crust.
Since Freaky’s is located in a space formerly occupied by Gumby’s, I had hope that the Freaky Stix would be a reincarnation of Pokey Stix, and that’s why I ordered the regular version (from $4.99 for 10″ to $9.99 for 16″). You know what? They were pretty close. They’re not as buttery or as seasoned as Pokey Stix, but they still were tasty, even though the stix were over-baked by probably 4-5 min.
You also can get Malicious Stix with jalapeños and Sriracha, meat stix, veggie stix and taco stix with chicken.
Regarding the wings, you can choose buffalo, BBQ, teriyaki or plain, and you can select quantities starting at 10 pieces ($6.99) all the way to 50 pieces ($35). The wings were quite disappointing. For one reason, they are baked, not deep fried as the photo on the menu shows. Also, they have just a smear of the sauce that must have been added during the baking process, not afterward, so they’re not as saucy as they should be.
I didn’t try any of the Beastwiches, which are served on an 8″ roll and range from $5.99-$7.99, and I probably never will. That’s because I’m not sure if I would ever come back, unless I was desperately craving some Pokey Stix.
Freaky’s Pizza and Wings is open for dinner and late-night every day. It’s mainly for carryout and delivery.
