McDonald’s add kiosks

dsc02519Have you noticed how almost every Madison-area McDonald’s is undergoing or has gone through a renovation? One of the new features you’ll encounter is the kiosks from which you can order your food. I accepted a recent invitation to the Monona location to test it out.

If you’ve ever used a smartphone, tablet or any other touch-screen device, you shouldn’t have too much difficulty using the kiosks. Everything on the menu, including local deals, are included and separated into categories. You simply touch the item you want, and then the interface allows you to customize your order (e.g. hold the pickles).

Even though the kiosks are intuitive to use, you’ll find a crew member on standby who can assist you.

The kiosks accept credit cards, cash and Apple Pay. Here’s something that’s new: if you’re dining in, you take a number, and your food will be brought out by a server, like Culver’s does. This is an example of how McDonald’s is redeploying its staff–local representatives stressed the kiosks are not meant to replace jobs.

If you don’t want to use the kiosks, you can still order from a cashier. If you’re like me and prefer to use self-check-out at grocery stores or stores like Target, you’ll probably prefer to use the kiosks at McDonald’s, too.

“We’re excited to share this evolved experience at McDonald’s with our customers,” Dion Conn, who owns several area McDonald’s, said in a statement. “We’re looking forward to offering (our guests) a new way to dine at McDonald’s.”
