Welcome back, Twinkies!

Sunday, June 30th, 2013

If you visit the Hostess website, you’ll see a countdown for the return of Twinkies, slated for July 15. Here’s some food for thought:

The first Twinkies were made with banana cream but later replaced with vanilla cream. After a 2005 tie-in with the movie “King Kong,” the flavor was brought back in 2007.

Make your own Twinkies with this Cream Canoe Pan.

Twinkies aren’t the only Hostess treats making a comeback–so are CupCakes and Donettes.

Twinkies have many imitators, including Golden Creme Cakes, Dreamies and Bingles.

Summers in Wisconsin means city/county/state fairs and of course, deep-fried Twinkies.

In the movie “UHF,” Weird “Al” Yankovic’s character eats a Twinkie stuffed with a hot dog.

Pancheros contest

Friday, May 24th, 2013

Here’s an interesting contest from Pancheros:

Pancheros salutes Bob, whose claim-to-fame is mixing ingredients for a uniform taste in each bite, by holding a contest in which diners take the unique utensil out of the kitchen and into the wild. Participants are encouraged to get imaginative and take Bob to places it otherwise would never see, like the beach or an iconic landmark.

To enter the contest, pick up a Bob at any Pancheros. Candidates must then snap a picture of Bob somewhere outside of the tool’s original home and post it to Pancheros’ Facebook page. One fan will be chosen on May 31 and another on June 7 to win free Pancheros burritos for a year based on the creativity of their submissions.

The contest will culminate on June 14, when one lucky participant will receive the ultimate grand prize of a hot air balloon ride along with a year of free burritos! Other standout entries will receive various surprise goodies from the burrito establishment.

Thoughts on gorging

Sunday, April 21st, 2013

I laughed so hard after comedian Louis C.K. described his bad eating habits: “The meal is not over when I’m full! The meal is over when I hate myself.” Haven’t we all been there?

Not too long after that, I watched the L.A. Beast chug six bottles of syrup. Check it out:

For your reference, each bottle has 2,520 calories, 624 grams of carbs and 1,440 mg of sodium. So he actually consumed 15,120 calories–not 7,000 as he said–in about two minutes. L.A. Beast then joked that he would have to go to the hospital. He’s not too far from the the need.

A couple years ago, two ABC News reporters ate 6,190 calories in one meal to see what would happen to their bodies. The doctors showed how their arteries narrowed right after the meal and continued that way for six hours. Of course, eating like this regularly can cause heart attacks.

Meanwhile, Fit Watch says that a sudden spike in your blood sugar levels can result in the loss of lean body mass (muscle), and that overeating increases the size of your fat cells.

So basically, gorging yourself in one sitting is really bad for you. At least binge drinking is okay, right?
