50 notable sandwiches

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

Reading the Sandwich: A Global History list of 50 Notable Sandwiches got me really hungry. From Bahn Mi to cheesesteak to reuben, to sandwiches I’ve never heard of (e.g. bauru, which is a combination of three cheeses melted in a double-broiler  with roast beef, tomato and gherkins in a French roll).

However, I was surprised more obvious sandwiches such as the Cuban, French Dip, pulled pork and hamburger weren’t included. Meanwhile, Vanda Pav (deep-fried spiced mashed potato patties in a bun) and Francesinha (a “wet croque-monsieur”) made it.

What do you think about this list? Are there other sandwiches from this country and others that should have been included?

More birds than a turducken

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Hope you had a good Thanksgiving! I’m wondering how many people out there ate turducken–a chicken stuffed into a duck stuffed into a turkey. While reading about this trifecta of birds made famous by former NFL TV commentator John Madden, I learned about the rôti sans pareil (“roast without equal”). You won’t believe this:

A bustard stuffed with a turkey, a goose, a pheasant, a chicken, a duck, a guinea fowl, a teal, a woodcock, a partridge, a plover, a lapwing, a quail, a thrush, a lark, an ortolan bunting and a garden warbler. I don’t even know what some of these birds are! According to Wikipedia, you probably couldn’t make this because some of the species are endangered.

Late-night eating

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

I was in Manhattan over the weekend and had dinner around 10:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. In each instance, the restaurant was full and required a reservation.

Back home in Madison on Sunday, I thought: other than pizza, Perkins or Denny’s, there aren’t a lot of late-night (after 11 p.m.) dining options in the vicinity. We probably only have the few we do–and they’re mostly concentrated downtown–because of the college student population.

Our dearth of late-night restaurant selections is obviously a function of the city itself. We are not a city that never sleeps. Our bars close at 2 a.m. There is no dazzling array of neon lights and bright signs that perpetuate daytime like in Times Square.

I guess Madison is better off than other cities. For example, I lived in Evanston for a while, and your best bet to satisfy those evening cravings is Burger King, and even the city wanted that to be closed early.

If you use the “late-night” check box on the EAT page, you’ll see a list of places that serve food after normal dinner hours, but in most cases, it’s a reduced menu or limited to Friday/Saturday-only. So enjoy your wings, gyro or burrito, just don’t expect a ribeye, Chilean sea bass or rack of lamb to be available.
